Reading: It is only when we come to love the desert, and prefer it to the oases, that we are well on the way to God. It is “an upside-down” world indeed! One can well be forgiven for forgetting, or refusing to believe he is on the right road when his throat his parched and his eyes are filled with sand. p. 12, When the Well Runs Dry—Prayer Beyond Beginnings; Thomas H. Green, SJ.

Prayer: I turned to Prayer Beyond Beginnings on this frosty morning and was reminded of my stay in Montana so many years ago.

Response: Though you might be travelling on foot in the desert, you pull behind you experience and a rack of inspirational readings that serve you well in the dry desert as well as in the frost you are now experiencing. Do see how a weather pattern can also contribute to your inner journey?

It would be good for you to identify those deserts in which you travel. Could one be aloneness or the life of a solitary? How about sitting alone creating or editing something that has gripped your creative energy? Think about how to deal with a discouraging thought that invades your inner sanctum—like is this really worth the effort?

Apply the same to your time in prayer when you seem dry like that traveler in the desert. It might come as a surprise to you, but as Thomas Green observed, such times are time to celebrate as you are on the way to God—and indeed it is an upside-down world of existence. Use these times to place yourself in the presence of the Lord, and pray the His will be accomplished in you. Praise God!

All for this morning.

As you have surmised, I am travelling again. In time, regularity with be restored. Blessings in the New Year.
