Scripture: When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

Prayer: I feel this morning that I was in that crowd, only younger than I am now. It was a morning like now—a faint outline of clouds to the north, the canal flat, and a stray seagull considering what he might snatch. Bursting with the energy of the listeners, I hurry home to reflect upon his words and even more the promise they contain—and I still do so many years later. Guide me Lord.

Response: I am the light of the Lord. Whisper those words as you close your eyes. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness. Think about how many times in life you uttered those sentiments wherever you found yourself in need, and how you have never been disappointed by His healing touch—even at the most challenging and disheartening times.

It is like quickening your step along a darkening corridor to be sure that you have in sight the Lord who is just ahead of you, leading you along a path that you haven’t travelled previously in matters of the heart. Was it loss, grief, loneliness, disappointment that caused the gloom? No matter, He is and will lead you, as He has said: I am the light of the world.

Prepare to follow Him this day and the day following, and discover the joy that awaits you in the words and sentiments of loved ones, in the energy that surges through you and is exhibited in the creativity you display, and in the peaceful sentiments you convey to all whom you encounter. Praise the Lord!

All for this morning.
