You Beckon Me
If I could walk across the water,
I’d slip between the breakers,
With the sun upon my back,
Sandal-wet east would be my choice
Toward channel buoys miles out,
From there I’d see if I could
Near mammoth container ships
Arcing south from Chesapeake.
My intention would be to
Beat the sun – reach Gibraltar
Before a storm – then south I’d turn,
No need to worry beads with ouzo.
It’s new adventure that I seek,
New sounds and smells and heat;
In Timbuktu I’d mount a camel
Bundled for adventure to no-place –
Where windblown adventure tales
Sound from muffled figures astride
Beasts that climb in rhythm-ed pace
Across those non-descript sand hills.
And in this place of silence
Wind divine I’d hear your voice
As if for once with purpose –
No doubt you beckon me.
