Scripture: I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation . . . I can do everything through him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:12-13
Prayer: Would that I took to heart Paul’s words at all times.
Response: Let me startle you by saying that your contentment is not about you – you being calm in adversity; but rather about being settled so that you can show a generous heart in service to those who are absent contentment when their lives are disrupted. It is becoming conscious of my love that contentment enfolds you. Through my love you discover this strength of spirit that might have gone unnoticed. Once discovered, you have no choice but to share that bounty with all you are in contact, family, friends, and strangers.
So contentment in adversity is a true sign that you are conscious – else you would be considered quite odd; though accept the risk that those who still slumber in frenetic activity will consider you such. It is important to see contentment and strength as one. No task, no challenge, no circumstance is a match for the overwhelming strength that contentment endows. Contentment is the secret in the martial arts of life – the guiding the force, the energy of chaos and adversity, rather than opposing and resisting it. Spend a moment on how you can guide that which at first you would resist.
Finally, the truth buried in these two short verses is a secret, that is, unknown by the vast majority of those lumbering along in the footsteps of those before them, their attention held hostage to every crisis that they read or hear about, or experience. In knowing now the secret truth, don’t keep it secret.
All for this morning.
