Meditation – July 15, 2009

Scripture: After leaving Succoth they camped at Etham on the edge of the desert. By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people. Exodus 13:20-22

Prayer: Help me to see your guidance in these descriptive verses.

Response: You’ve been at the edge of a desert or a barren land and you have experienced the need to calculate accurately your direction; in life you have similarly paused trying to gain your bearings before trekking off into the unknown. A considerable difference between a land trek and a soul trek is that for the latter I am there to guide you in a pillar of cloud – or sand if you prefer – and with a light the turns ever bright on the darkest night.

With this assurance, you can be quite an explorer, discovering new regions of your soul if you make bold to take the first step. Indeed, I am not encouraging you to remain in your steps, awestruck by the unknown before you. Rather I am prodding you, inviting you to take those first steps directly forward, following my guidance that never leaves you.

On this journey, one of enormous significance, you discover that all your previous encounters with the unknown prepare you and you are more alert, indeed conscious, to that guidance that is visible, shining bright on the most windswept or rain swept night. My guidance is heard in laughter, felt in tears, refreshed in silence.

For today greet what awaits you at the edge of your desert – even if you expect the day and the terrain of the mind and heart you travel to be without surprise – make bold to venture forth knowing that you cannot become lost or even disoriented once you acknowledge that pillar of cloud and light that goes before you.

All for this morning.
