On Turning Seventy

Reflecting on significance of this milestone, I wrote this poem to celebrate the event.
On Turning Seventy
It’s new terrain – even foreign
As he crossed over onto to a ridge
Surface flat – frozen – desolate;
He wondered breathless if ascent
Worthied a climb so mountainous.
He paused – breathed in deep
A grace to fortify his soul gazed across
Windswept — snowbound peaks,
Silent sentinels – witnesses
Marking this solitary ascent.
Nothing more to do but be,
No more trials to prove –
Compete – endure — determine;
No – now challenge is to serve
Selflessly without notice of gain.
In that special moment
A dawning edged its glow
Around and through over
Peaks surrounding to bring
Knowing warmth without – within.
No longer are eyes intent upon
Footsteps in the frost — freed are they
To contemplate soul flight that awaits –
Though not just yet as he seeks to
Intimate with those following close behind;
Encourage console humor joy fortify
That ragged band tested in elements
Not planned – even anticipated,
But endured as they trudged on
As he was encouraged by those
Who reached the summit first;
Waited once to hear his footfall,
Ancestors and those departed
Who observed with understanding
The path they traveled once;
They celebrate in recognition
This solitary wanderer climber
Who seeks full consciousness,
That love so pursued alone,
As they a time sought the same.
As light and warmth spread,
Pause stillness are indulged,
Peace harmony course through
Heart veins that once trembled
To a strain now recognized serene.
