Pray for Peace
Posted on Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009
This poem was inspired by a sign posted outside a local church.
Pray For Peace
Pray for peace;
Bingo on Wednesdays.
Pray for peace;
Best to the family.
Pray for peace;
I wish I could help.
Pray for peace;
I’m busy right now.
Pray for peace;
Where did he go?
Pray for peace;
I didn’t see it happen.
Pray for peace;
What do you want?
Pray for peace;
How to explain?
Pray for peace;
What could I do?
Pray for peace;
I’m getting it now.
Pray for peace;
Wake me more conscious.
Pray for peace;
Forgive me this Wednesday.

Dressed in Tatters

Dressed in Tatters
He thought He’d fool me,
Disguised in trodden threads,
Splint visible — teeth battered,
Thru eyes bright — piercing.
“Help me — I need to reach
Norfolk thirty minutes away.”
“I’ll give you a dollar.”
“The fare is three forty.”
I gave Him five;
He thought He’d fool me,
That I would judge
Him dressed in tatters.

I Gave Up Hope

I Gave Up Hope
I gave up hope –
Feel so much better;
No longer nested
In future illusion.
Now I explore each moment,
Described as uncertain,
Vibrant still-touch damp,
Emerging on canvas;
Time slows as on command,
Reaches within no-space,
Lingers for eternity –
Relieved from hope-anxiety.
I gave up hope –
Feel so much better.

Shiver in Expectation

Shiver in Expectation
Would that I could paint
Soft pink billows at dawn
Rising against a backdrop of
Sound surging sea;
Capture on canvas
The chill breeze hinting
Winter’s approach,
Just beyond my memory
Of lingering summer.
But I can’t – just sit in awe,
Praise and am thankful,
Shiver in expectation,
As another day unfolds.

What is Loneliness?
Posted on Tuesday, November 10th, 2009
What is Loneliness?
Loneliness is a present feeling,
Not a past reflection or illusion;
Loneliness is silence magnified,
Breathing in a not-fun-tunnel.
Loneliness grips one’s jaw
Unseen without effort,
Yet causes vision to sharpen,
Hearing to heighten each footfall.
Loneliness is an admission
Of need not neediness,
Presence in place of memory,
Communion beyond soliloquy.
Loneliness prods one to seek joy,
To celebrate – even cavort,
Abandon self-indulgence,
Risk – yes risk – rejection.
Loneliness always leads to laughter,
As self-pity to selfless love,
Absorption to service,
Age to sage wisdom.
Loneliness is a boundless grace,
A mysterious soul force,
Resounding deep within,
Indeed struck from love.
