Winter Sunset

Posted on Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

What else is there to do, but to observe what is happening around us?

Winter Sunset

Heron was hunched
Atop the piling
In a frigid winter wind.

She seemed ready
To launch into
A dance step

As she leaned,
Her weight forward
Onto one leg

Against the gust
That sought to dislodge
Her from the perch.

Black, white, gray –
Her dress shimmered
In the cold blast.

Was she determined
To catch setting sun
This winter eve?

If not, what truth
Was she pondering
In her stillness?

Then she lifted off
On a gust heading north
Up the canal stirred frost.
