After A Deep Rain

Posted on Friday, November 21st, 2008

After A Deep Rain
A Great Blue Heron
Looked at me this morning;
It stood upon a piling
Just after a deep rain.
He gazed as I do
When time is not urgent;
Still – shifting its weight,
Yawning a wide beak,
And then flew off
Without a sound;
Leaving me in silence
That stills me yet.

Does A Footstep Linger?

Posted on Friday, November 14th, 2008

Early one morning I passed a sand dune upon which I walked three days earlier. There across it were my footsteps though heavy rains fell in the intervening days. And so the inspiration for this poem.
Does A Footstep Linger?
Does a footstep linger
Into the present?
What about a letter—
Its ink now faded,
A memory suffered,
Embrace recalled?
Right now these granules
Of time form presence
With each footstep reached,
Thought endeared,
Memory created,
Embrace encountered.
It’s timelessness you see,
A mystery weaving vibrancy
In steps that do linger,
Letters expressing truth,
Thoughts for plunging deep,
And yes – embraces that confirm.

Joy

Posted on Friday, November 7th, 2008

A journey to the beach prompted this reflection on joy.
Joy Sand Wind Sea
We walked the beach
Late afternoon – wind brisk,
Barefoot he carried a bag
With paper to fashion planes
Of flight across the sand.
I watched as he tossed one
And then another aloft
Against the wind to see it
Reverse – race down along a draft,
As he chased close onto its wake.
Cormorants passing overhead,
Rope line wavy in the rush,
Paused in flight to measure
Competition on the sand-ward,
And then flew on satisfied.
I stood swaying back to sea wind,
Witnessed at deepest level
Uninhibited innocence and presence,
In balance – calibrated – at ease,
He could not be contained.
I prayed for his long life,
Grace constant to protect him,
Prosperity so he to serve
The light that diminishes – scatters
Those darkened corners of despair.
We returned across the sand,
I gave thanks for this time
Revealing in instant agelessness,
Eternity wrapped in a scene of
Joy—sand – wind – sea.
